Green SF
Bikes & Scooters
BikeShare launched as a pilot program in 2013. In 2018, Motivate, the company that operates the blue, Ford-branded bicycles, launched 250 pedal-assisted “e-bikes” that go up to 18mph.Jump, the bright orange pedal assisted bikes, along with LimeBike, Bird and Spin all hit the streets of San Francisco roughly about the same time, creating very mixed responses. Those wanting inexpensive and fun ways to get from point A to B, are happy to see them and to have choices. Others are afraid of pedestrian collisions, and “littering”. This situation changes frequently with companies coming and going since City Hall has been weighing in.
Conservation
Our droughts make it clear that all our natural assets are valuable. Great tips for conserving:
Electric Car Chargers
There are approximately 200 electric car chargers in the City. This will most definitely increase substantially in the coming years.
An excellent website (also app) is plugshare.com
SF Plantfinder
A resource for gardeners, designers, ecologists and anyone who is interested in greening neighborhoods, enhancing our urban ecology and surviving the drought. SF PLANTFINDER
Goat Grazing
Only in San Francisco, right? citygrazing.com offers "environmentally friendly solution to weed control". The goats will clear an overgrown back yard or slope. These delightful creatures are also available for parties, educational visits and documentaries.
Landmark Tree Program
In 2006 San Francisco had the vision to create a Landmark Tree Program to preserve and protect the City's best trees. Learn more about it HERE
Pavement to Parks
These public "parklets" are cropping up all over the City. It is an interesting collaboration between the SF Planning Dept., Dept. of Public Works, and the Municipal Transportation Agency to create and test ideas for new public spaces:
Recycling
sfrecycles.org is the place to go to recycle items that do not fit into the black, green or blue bins.
Appliances or old cans of paint and cleaning supplies can be scheduled for a free pickup.
“San Francisco is the only city I can think of that can survive all of the things you people are doing to it an still look beautiful” ~Frank Lloyd Wright
